Hi! This is my first post, but I recently ran into this error, and my computer technological know-how and intuition led me to this super simple fix that will save people a lot of time and effort. I don't think I saw it anywhere either, so if there is a similar post elsewhere I apologize in advance!
Are you one of the unfortunate first-time installers of Artifical Academy like myself, and skipped through the installation without changing the install path so you could patch to the English version? Worry not, friend. You don't actually have to uninstall the game and do it over; there's a far simpler solution.
The process is the same all around for each Windows version. But for the sake of explaining thoroughly:
[On Windows XP]
Start > Press Run > type regedit.exe > Enter
On the sidebar to your left, drop down lists will appear. Drop down Computer (which should already be dropped) > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Illusion > AA
Once you've clicked AA, you'll see a string value titled INSTALLDIR. Simply change this from the Unicode Japanese text to whatever you like in English, and follow up by changing the folder path to suit.
Do the same with AAEdit directory.
You've fixed it! Now you can patch the game and enjoy.
[On Windows Vista/7]
Start > Search Bar > type regedit.exe > Enter
On the sidebar to your left, drop down lists will appear. Drop down Computer (which should already be dropped) > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Illusion > AA
Once you've clicked AA, you'll see a string value titled INSTALLDIR. Simply change this from the Unicode Japanese text to whatever you like in English, and follow up by changing the folder path to suit.
Do the same with AAEdit directory.
You've fixed it! Now you can patch the game and enjoy.
[On Windows 8/8.1]
Right click where the start button used to be > Run / Metro search > type regedit.exe / regedit > Enter
